Treating every failure as “weak grip” sends all three athletes to the same dead-hang workout even though only one needs it. The useful question is not whether the carry feels hard. It should. Ask what changes first. If the fingers open while posture stays tall, grip capacity is suspect. If turns are wide or hesitant, path skill is costing time without improving fitness.
Use the HOLD framework
HOLD gives the station four jobs. Hands means a centred, repeatable grip with the wrist stacked rather than folded. Organisation means ribs over pelvis, shoulders down and a quiet trunk. Line means a controlled walk with small turns and no unnecessary lateral movement. Drop plan means deciding where and why you will put the implements down before your fingers make the decision for you. Each job is observable, so each can be trained.
The framework prevents the usual mistake: squeezing harder to solve everything. A death grip adds forearm tension without fixing a swinging load or frantic breathing. Hold firmly enough to own the handle, then spend attention on posture and rhythm. The goal is not to make the load feel light. The goal is to stop creating extra work.
The carry is not a grip contest; it is a posture-and-pace test in which grip is only one possible limiter.
Diagnose grip, posture or pacing
Run a three-part test on separate days or with full recovery. First, carry the race load for a straight controlled effort and note where form changes. Second, perform a heavy but shorter carry to expose raw hand and trunk capacity. Third, place the race-load carry after a hard but repeatable conditioning effort. Compare the failures. If only the third breaks down, the limiter is probably compromised execution rather than fresh grip strength.
Record four facts: distance before the first reset, reason for the reset, posture at the reset and run quality immediately afterwards. Do not reduce the test to “completed” or “failed”. A completed carry with a severe shrug, breath hold and ruined exit can still be a poor race solution. A planned brief reset may be better if it preserves the run.
HOLD turns a vague station problem into observable jobs you can test and train.
Build hands that last
Train support grip specifically. Heavy short carries develop confidence under load. Longer submaximal carries build time under tension. Suitcase carries add anti-lateral-flexion demand and reveal side-to-side differences. Static holds are useful when space is limited, but walking matters because every step changes the load. Progress one variable at a time: load, distance, total work or reduced rest.
Avoid taking every grip set to failure. The current ACSM position stand emphasises that complicated methods and momentary failure are not automatically required for useful resistance-training outcomes. Leave enough quality to maintain posture and repeat the work. Race-specific grip is the ability to keep producing a clean carry while fatigued, not the ability to survive one ugly maximal hold.
Make the turns cheap
Turns expose a hidden tax. Approaching too fast creates a wide arc. Stopping completely forces a second acceleration. Letting the inside implement swing pulls the torso out of line. Practise approaching under control, shortening the last steps, rotating around a compact centre and rebuilding pace after the turn. Use the event layout available on race day rather than assuming every venue will feel identical.
A useful drill is a short rectangle with deliberate corners. Keep the path consistent and time the full sequence, but also score collisions, foot crossovers and uncontrolled swings. Faster is only better when it stays repeatable. The official rulebook governs the race standard; your training drill should build the control needed to satisfy it without panic.
Choose a drop plan before you need it
The best default is a continuous carry when it remains clean. The second-best option is a planned reset at a known point. The worst option is an emergency drop after pace has collapsed and the hands are already opening. Decide the trigger: posture breaks twice, the handle slips beyond a recoverable position, or pace falls below a controlled walk. Put the implements down safely, reset the hands and leave deliberately.
Do not copy another athlete’s break plan. Hand size, handle feel, division load, fatigue and training history change the answer. Test continuous and planned-reset versions after similar pre-fatigue. Compare total station time and the first minute of running afterwards. The faster carry can lose overall if it produces a slow exit.
Train the exit, not just the station
The carry ends when the next run becomes stable, not when the implements touch the floor. Many athletes release the load, throw the arms around and surge. That turns local forearm fatigue into whole-body noise. Practise a calm release, relaxed hands, tall posture and short controlled steps out of the station. Let arm swing return rather than forcing it.
Pair carry intervals with a short run and score the transition. If the run takes too long to settle, reduce carry intensity or improve the breathing plan. LimiterIQ treats stations as links in a chain. A station PB that damages the next link is not automatically useful race execution.
A four-week grip-carry block
Week one establishes the test and cleans posture. Week two adds total submaximal distance. Week three introduces race-load work after controlled conditioning. Week four reduces volume and retests the same protocol. Keep one heavy-short exposure and one longer-specific exposure each week if recovery permits. Place them far enough from demanding pulling sessions that technique is not trained in a permanently exhausted state.
Progress only when the HOLD score stays intact: hands remain centred, organisation stays tall, line stays controlled and the drop plan remains deliberate.
