SkiErg pacing is easy to misdiagnose because the visible failure often appears after the real mistake. This guide separates the limiter from the symptom and gives you a testable plan for HYROX-style racing.
The opening station can create invisible debt
SkiErg pacing goes wrong because the monitor rewards every aggressive pull immediately while the race punishes the cost later. Fresh arms, noise and a stopped flywheel make the first seconds feel like a chance to bank time. The athlete chases a split they have never held under race conditions, tightens the arms and shortens the recovery. The number looks excellent until it does not.
The useful goal is not the fastest isolated kilometre. It is the fastest SkiErg that lets you leave organised. LimiterIQ calls this transfer pace: the best output you can produce while preserving the breathing, trunk control and leg rhythm needed for the next run and the remaining stations.
Use the SET model
SET divides the station into settle, economy and transfer. Settle controls the first pulls so excitement does not choose the pace. Economy uses the large muscles and a smooth recovery rather than arm-dominant panic. Transfer governs the closing segment and exit: increase only if the planned split is stable and the next task is protected.
This is not permission to be passive. A controlled opening can still be decisive. The difference is that every pull belongs to a plan. You know the target split, acceptable stroke-rate range, technical cue and closing decision before touching the handles.
A good opening station creates speed without borrowing effort from the rest of the race.
Build power from the centre
Concept2’s official double-pole guidance starts tall and athletic, engages the core, leads with the upper body and uses a hip hinge before the arms finish. The machine is not an endless triceps extension. When the arms try to produce the whole stroke, small muscles accumulate fatigue while the trunk and hips contribute less than they could.
Use “hat to pockets” as a simple shape cue: begin high, connect through the torso and finish the handles beside the thighs. Keep wrists quiet. Finish with purpose without yanking beyond a useful range. Technique should look connected rather than segmented into a squat, arm pull and hurried stand.
SET turns a vague station problem into observable jobs you can test and train.
Recovery is part of the pace
Concept2 recommends controlling the recovery and describes a roughly 1:2 drive-to-recovery relationship. That does not mean staring at a stopwatch during the race. It means the return should take longer than the power phase. A violent pull followed by an equally violent return keeps tension high and removes the moment in which you breathe and prepare the next stroke.
Watch for creeping urgency. If stroke rate rises while the split stays the same, each pull may be producing less useful work. Re-establish a complete hinge, relaxed return and breath. Pace is a product of power per pull and stroke frequency. More pulls are not automatically more speed.
Find the split you can transfer
Test three sessions. First, perform a controlled fresh effort and record average split, stroke rate and technical breakdown. Second, repeat shorter intervals at that pace with ample recovery to learn the feel. Third, place a race-specific effort after a controlled run or mixed-work primer and follow it with another run. The third test determines transfer pace.
Compare more than the erg time. Record the first minute after the SkiErg: breathing control, run pace, arm tension and ability to make calm decisions. If a faster erg gains seconds but the exit loses them, the number is vanity. Choose the fastest version that keeps the chain intact.
A three-phase station plan
Phase one covers the start. Use several purposeful pulls to move the flywheel, then settle before the monitor tempts you into a sprint. Phase two is the long middle: hold the target split inside a small band and use one technical cue. Phase three begins only when you are still in control. Decide in training whether to maintain or squeeze, rather than making an emotional late move.
The monitor can display pace, watts or Calories. Use the unit you understand in training and that the competition permits. Avoid switching your decision system on race day. Split per 500 metres is useful because it turns each pull into a familiar pace signal, but the correct display is the one you have rehearsed.
Damper is not an intensity dial
Concept2 explains that damper setting changes airflow and feel; your effort determines intensity. A high setting is not automatically more advanced. Different machines can feel different because drag factor changes with conditions and maintenance. Train across realistic machines and learn a comfortable range instead of attaching ego to a number on the lever.
Do not arrive with an untested rule such as “always ten” or “always five”. Use warm-up access, if available, to confirm familiar feel. Then leave the setting alone and execute. The race is not the place for a damper experiment.
Train the station as a handover
A useful weekly sequence includes technique intervals when fresh, a pace session that teaches the target split and a compromised session that links the SkiErg to running. Not every exposure should be maximal. The skill is repeating efficient work while the body is warm and the environment is noisy.
Finish training reps exactly as you want to race: controlled final pulls, safe handle return, immediate orientation and a deliberate first segment of running. A clean handover turns the SkiErg from a standalone test into part of the event.
Score a SkiErg session properly
A useful SkiErg log captures more than average pace. Record opening split, settled split, stroke-rate range, the point at which technique changed and the first controlled running split afterwards. Add one sentence describing the failure signature: arms tightened, hinge shortened, recovery rushed or breathing lost rhythm. Over several sessions, that pattern tells you whether the next change belongs in technique, pacing or conditioning.
Keep the test environment consistent enough to compare. Use the same warm-up, machine where practical, monitor view and pre-fatigue. Do not chase a faster average by hiding a poor opening or damaged exit. Progress is a smaller split range, cleaner movement and a better handover at the same output, followed eventually by more output at the same transfer cost.
Run the self-diagnosis
- First ten pulls are dramatically faster than target
- Arms fatigue before trunk or breathing
- Recovery is as fast as the drive
- Stroke rate rises without better pace
- Damper choice has never been tested
- Exit run takes too long to settle
If several items repeat under the same conditions, train the matching limiter. If the pattern changes every attempt, standardise the test before adding more work.
