Start the exhale as the handles pass eye level. Finish it near the hips.
Technique cues
Make breathing part of the stroke.
A hard pull needs a clean exhale. A patient recovery creates the inhale. Build the pattern before intensity makes the decision for you.
Let the arms rise and ribs expand together. Avoid shallow panic breaths at the top.
Hinge from the hips with a long spine. Do not collapse the chest to chase handle depth.
Use a rate you can breathe through. A faster stroke is useless if it destroys the run.
Common faults
Catch the spiral before it starts.
Drop power five percent and exaggerate the exhale for ten strokes.
Relax the grip, lengthen the arms, and initiate with the lats.
Return to the planned rhythm before chasing split.
Finish the final 100 m slightly calmer and stand tall for two full breaths.
- 6 x 90 seconds with a complete exhale.
- 6 x 2 minutes at controlled threshold.
- 4 x 500 m holding rate and breath pattern.
- 1000 m ski into an 800 m run, repeated twice.
