This station behaves differently from wall balls because the work has two phases per rep: the burpee (chest to floor + stand) and the broad jump (explosive forward leap). The burpee is metabolic. The broad jump is neuromuscular. They tax different systems, but the system that fails first determines how the rest of the station feels. Get the cadence wrong and your nervous system stops firing the jump cleanly by rep 30. Get it right and the legs stay sharp through to the finish line.
Why the middle of the station exposes the opening pace
Watch a 1-hour HYROX heat at the burpee broad jump station. Almost everyone, from sub-65 finishers to first-timers, slows down between reps 40 and 50. The pattern is independent of fitness level. What changes is what comes after the wall: stronger athletes hold a slower steady cadence; weaker athletes drop into 2-second pauses between every rep and lose 90 seconds across the back half.
A common cause is opening faster than the rhythm tested in training. The first metres feel manageable, so cadence rises or jump length becomes ambitious. Later, breathing recovery shortens, foot position becomes less consistent, and legal movement takes longer. That pattern is pacing debt, but it must be distinguished from insufficient capacity, poor technique, or an earlier race error.
The metronome principle
The fix is mental, not physical. You don't need stronger legs or better fitness, you need a fixed cadence that you commit to before you start, and that you do not allow yourself to exceed regardless of how fresh you feel.
Think of it like a metronome. One rep every X seconds, exactly. Not faster when fresh. Not slower when tired. The cadence is the cadence. Your job is to match it.

Use a lane marker or fixed distance in training. Record time, legal repetitions, jump consistency, and the first minute of the next run. The best cadence is the fastest one that remains legal and repeatable without destroying the exit.

If you find your breathing falling behind your rep cadence by rep 20, your cadence is too fast for your aerobic capacity. Slow down. The cadence in the table is a starting target, your real cadence is whatever lets you breathe in rhythm without strain.
Broad jump distance
Most athletes overjump in the first 30 reps. The race standard is 1.2 metres (women's open) or 1.8 metres (men's open). Jumping further wastes energy without saving time, you still have to do the same number of reps. Jumping the exact minimum distance saves quad power for the back half.
Where to land
The official rulebook leaves jump length to the racer, but takeoff and landing standards still apply. Test a distance that keeps both feet parallel, avoids steps or shuffles, and preserves rhythm. A longer jump is useful only when it reduces total station cost rather than creating slower burpees or a worse exit.
The three common mistakes
Mistake 1: Fast-start cadence
The single biggest mistake. Slow your first ten reps until they feel almost embarrassing. The clock you're racing isn't the burpee station, it's the run that follows it.
Mistake 2: Overjumping
Hit the line, not past it. Practice jump distance in training so race day feels automatic.
Mistake 3: Bouncing off the chest
Do not invent a shortcut around the movement standard. The current rulebook requires clear chest contact with the ground, parallel feet for takeoff and landing, and no extra steps or shuffles. Train the same legal pattern you intend to race.
Lock a tested cadence before you start. Keep it controlled through the first lane, breathe with each movement, and count only legal work. Retest over a measured distance under fatigue before calling the strategy race-ready.
