Training Lab · equipment swaps

What can I use instead of...

Hotel gyms, FIFO camp gyms, garage setups, travel weeks, when you don't have the exact equipment the plan calls for. Members share what worked. The session intent matters more than the specific kit.

Swap principles · what to preserve, what to substitute

Preserve: the limiter being trained (e.g. if it's grip durability, the swap must still hammer grip). Preserve: the RPE cap and duration. Substitute: the implement. Don't: use a swap as an excuse to do the easier version. Don't: swap a high-impact session for low-impact unless that's the prescribed modification. When in doubt, log the swap and the coaches will tell you if it preserved intent.

FIFO swing · Carrapateena · yesterday

FIFO version of Tuesday session for anyone in a similar situation. Camp gym has no sled, no sandbag, has a treadmill + dumbbells + a TRX. What worked: treadmill at 12% incline 8×40s for the sled push, dumbbell racked-carry walking lunges (loaded 2×20kg in front rack), TRX inverted rows in place of any pulling work. Felt 90% as fatiguing as the real session.

Garage-gym crowd: tractor tyre flipping at 80kg makes a decent sled substitute if you don't have one. Same lower-body extension pattern, less specific but it loads the calves and glutes hard. Not perfect but workable. Anyone done weighted vest + slow walking as a sled sub?

Weighted vest + walking up a steep hill at 12-15% is the cleanest sled substitute, same forward-lean mechanics, same calf + glute load, no joint impact. Aim for 6×60s if your sled prescription is 6×50m. Tyre flips work but they're a different stimulus (more posterior chain, less forward drive). Both legit, depends what you have.

What's the closest substitute for wall balls if you don't have a wall ball OR a high target? Have a 6kg medicine ball, kettlebells, dumbbells, a pull-up bar. No wall above shoulder height.
